Mid Semester Presentation

For the mid semester presentation I rethought my programmatic organization and sorted out my thoughts. I focused on the main element. the S.O. and tried to find new ways of expressing it. the results were presented in a poster and model.

This is Private !

The last exercise was about dealing with public and private relations (like we haven't already...).

I first though about those concepts when I was dealing with program. I separated functions according to different privacy levels where, public is the are which visitors are invited to - such are the lecture halls and the cafeteria. the more private areas are the classes and workshops which are the territory of the students alone. these programmatic distinction made me divide the college in to areas of function and in to two major privacy area:

The building equator between private and public

for this exercise I decided to take a specific function and see how the different levels of privacy apply to it. The library is a public function which is adjacent to the public passage and still has more private areas.

the S.O. (see below) stretches from the main passage (public)

in to the public areas of the library.

Schematic Plan

The section shows the different areas of the library. the first schema shows the relations between the function the passage and the "edge" which is a new idea added to the building. (in purple).

below in the section there is the main hall with the public reading. a balcony with "more" private reading and a closed room for computer and digital research. at the edge the balcony stretches to an exterior reading area.

The presentation also included a first model of the S.O. but more as a firs step towards defining the formation material and relation of the element.

Who wants a Vegi ??

The third exercise was followed by a focus on a dialog between mineral and vegetal (a.k.a the fourth exercise). I actually didn't relate to that idea at the that moment. I knew each function should have a different relation with the outside and the natural aspect of things, hence vegetation, but I was unsure to what extent at that moment. that idea was expressed on the program schema on the right of the presentation poster.

what I decided to express, was an idea, a though, a vision. of an Organic (hence vegetal) structural organism (S.O.)which changes and moves through the buildings, linking the different function. this organism, I hope, will effect the vegetal nature of the project.

by the time of the presentation the S.O. wasn't fully developed and was still very rigged, and portrayed by a semi-transparent cardboard with a "sporadic structural exterior".

Droping Functions

The Third Exercise had two parts. the first was to analyze the program and understand the different functions and relations, the second was to show these relations from an "open & close" point of view.

the first step shows the different functions and how I decided to separate them based on function relations. the model shows my first idea of how a unique passages will Link the different SEPARATED elements. (to focus the discussion, the passages, which are the more "open" were built from a solid cardboard, while everything else was transparent)

Recapping, I found that the first step wasn't profound enough with my idea. while trying to further understand the design concept I came up with the following schema.

The improvement is that now, the cafeteria now serves as a center in a more profound movement and function relations schema. this idea was shown at the next presentation.

each separated function received a different color while the cafeteria and main hall are in the center linking the other functions.

the above images shows the placements of functions in the site according to the grids that flow from the surroundings plus and exploded isometric showing the relations between different masses..
(the above images were a part of different discussion)

Site Layers (group resarch)

While working the project we were divided into groups, each group researched a different aspects of the site and presented it at the studio.

our presentation covered the programmatic relation between the functions of the different buildings in the complex.

our discoveries were presented in the following poster (plus a short pp presentation)

First Exercise

On our first exercise we were directed to draw a schematic idea of our own vision of the design complex. Then we should select a location for the upcoming college. The idea should be portrayed on 3 A4's with plans section and sketches.

I decided to use 1 A4, to show two situations that occur in the site One is an open space, that doesn't convey a city or dense place feel. The other, an ally .. That has a unique perspective. The difference is shown in relations to the opening view of the sky.

The other 2 A4 were used to show an idea, a plan and a perspective view One of the complexes as a hole with the board walk that pass near the selected site (in the middle). And on the side a view showing how this walk should look with the density idea and how the building (and college) adjacent to it can effect that feeling.
